Painting, mosaic, graphics, digital art
May 13 – June 14, 2026
The Dostoevsky Museum presents the exhibition by Petersburg artist Valentin Levitin — painting, mosaic, graphics, and digital art.
Valentin Levitin's work is associated with philosophical painting and the metaphysical direction in art. In Levitin's view, Cézanne and later the Cubists realised the ideas of Platonic aesthetics, which called not for copying and depicting appearances, but for contemplating the geometric foundations of things. The classic subjects of Levitin's works are the quiet dialogue between a bottle and a vase filled with fruit, or the silent conversation between a tower and a tree resembling a stone flower. These are architectural fantasies — an apotheosis of geometry rendered in close, refined tones.
At the same time, his elegant graphic works are dominated by Petersburg motifs, which echo the image of the city in the poetry of the Silver Age and of our own time, as well as the Petersburg of Dostoevsky.
In 2024–2026, Valentin Levitin has been creating a new series of works in the field of digital technology. According to the artist, experimenting with abstract forms on a computer is akin to the wondrous and unexpected transformations of coloured patterns in a kaleidoscope — something he loved to watch as a child.
Admission is included in the museum entrance ticket.
